Finding the perfect white isn't quite as simple as it sounds. Here's what I consider when choosing a beautiful, warm and timeless colour palette.
If there's one thing I've learnt over the years, it's that choosing the right white paint colour can be surprisingly difficult.
There are so many options, and while they might look almost identical on a paint swatch, once they're on the walls they can feel completely different.
Some whites feel too cool, others can appear yellow, and then there are those beautiful warm whites that somehow make a space feel softer, calmer and more inviting.
I absolutely love what the right paint colour can do for a home.
It's one of the most effective ways to transform a space without changing the furniture or renovating.
And in Australian homes, where natural light can be incredibly strong, getting the undertone right is so important.
Why I Love Warm White Interiors
I'm naturally drawn to interiors that feel warm, relaxed and layered.
I love beautiful timbers, natural stone, tactile fabrics and colours that create a sense of comfort.
Warm white paint provides such a lovely foundation for these materials.
It can soften a contemporary new build, complement existing architectural details and create a beautiful backdrop for furniture, artwork and interesting pieces collected over time.
But not all warm whites are created equal.
The secret is finding the right undertone for your home.
My Favourite Warm White Paint Colours
There are a few Dulux colours I find myself coming back to when exploring warmer, more inviting interiors.
Dulux Natural White
Natural White is a popular choice for good reason.
It's a soft, warm white that can work beautifully with timber, stone and natural textures.
I love how it creates a gentle backdrop without making a room feel overly creamy.
It's worth sampling in your own home, particularly if you have cooler flooring or very bright natural light.
Dulux Antique White U.S.A.
Antique White U.S.A. has a little more warmth and depth.
I love this kind of colour when I want to create a softer, more inviting atmosphere, particularly in homes with natural timber, earthy tones and layered furnishings.
It can be beautiful in living rooms and bedrooms where you're looking for warmth without introducing a strong colour.
Dulux Hog Bristle Quarter
For something with a little more character, Hog Bristle Quarter is worth considering.
It sits in that lovely warm neutral territory and can give walls a little more depth than a traditional white.
I particularly like exploring colours like this in new builds where the architecture feels quite crisp and you want to introduce a more relaxed, lived-in feeling.
Dulux Whisper White
Whisper White is another option to explore if you're after a soft, warm backdrop.
It's a beautiful starting point for homes with natural materials and a restrained colour palette.
As with any white, the surrounding finishes and natural light will influence how it appears.
The Biggest Mistake People Make When Choosing White Paint
I think one of the most common mistakes is choosing a white based on how it looks in someone else's home.
You might see a beautiful colour on Instagram, save the photo and assume it will look exactly the same in your space.
But lighting changes everything.
The direction your home faces, the amount of natural light, your flooring, cabinetry and even the colours outside your windows can all influence how a white appears.
A colour that looks beautifully warm in one home might feel too yellow or too grey in another.
That's why I always recommend testing paint colours in the actual space before making a final decision.
Should Your Walls, Ceilings and Trims Be the Same White?
This is something I get asked quite often.
And the answer really depends on the home and the look you're trying to achieve.
Using the same white on walls, ceilings and trims can create a beautiful, seamless result, particularly when you want a calm and cohesive feeling.
You can also use different finishes to create subtle contrast.
Alternatively, pairing warm white walls with a slightly lighter ceiling can help maintain a sense of brightness.
I don't think there's one formula that works for every home.
It's about looking at the architecture, the natural light and the overall colour palette before deciding.
Don't Forget About Your Flooring and Furniture
Paint colours should never be chosen in isolation.
I always consider the flooring, cabinetry, benchtops, furniture and other finishes before finalising a wall colour.
A warm white that works beautifully with oak flooring might feel quite different against cool grey tiles.
And if you're furnishing a new home, I think it's worth considering your future furniture selections at the same time.
The aim is to create a palette where everything feels connected, rather than choosing each element separately and hoping it all comes together.
How to Choose the Right Warm White for Your Home
My advice is to narrow your selection down to a few colours and test them properly.
Look at larger painted samples in different areas of the room and observe them throughout the day.
Morning light, afternoon sun and artificial lighting can all change how a colour feels.
And don't be afraid to choose something with a little more warmth or depth.
Sometimes the colour that looks slightly darker on a sample is the one that feels beautiful once it's applied throughout the room.
For me, choosing paint is about so much more than finding a colour you like.
It's about creating the feeling you want your home to have.
