We're having a bit of a colour moment at Sammi Interiors.
One of our favourite ways to bring personality into children's spaces is through colour drenching: wrapping the walls, trims and even the ceiling in one beautiful tone.
Rather than relying on themed décor or traditionally "childlike" colours, we love using colour to create the feeling of the room itself. Think dusty pinks, warm clay, buttery neutrals, muted greens and soft earthy tones, layered with natural timber, linen and playful details.
The result? A kids' room that feels fun and full of personality, but still beautifully considered, and able to grow with them.
What is colour drenching?
Colour drenching means painting every surface of a room in a single colour, or a tight tonal family: walls, skirting boards, door frames and, most importantly, the ceiling. With nothing competing for attention, the room feels calm, cohesive and enveloping rather than busy.
It is a bolder move than a feature wall, and often an easier one to live with, because the whole space reads as one considered idea.
The palette: colours that work in a kids' room
Skip the primaries and the cartoon characters. The colours that feel most joyful in a child's room tend to be the ones with a little depth.
Dusty pink is soft and warm without turning sugary. Warm clay and terracotta bring an earthy, adventurous note. Buttery neutrals feel sunny but calm, a lovely backdrop for a nursery or toddler room. Muted greens, from sage to soft olive, add something restful and nature-led, while oat, caramel and biscuit give a gentler, more layered result.
Whatever you choose, test it on the wall and watch it through the day. Colour shifts a great deal between morning light and evening.
The details
Colour drenching can read as serious on paper. The playfulness lives in what you layer over it.
Natural timber in a bed, shelf or toy storage adds warmth and grain. Linen bedding, curtains and a tonal rug keep the look soft and layered. Paper lantern pendants or a sculptural lamp bring personality overhead, while a low shelf of picture books and a rotating wall of your child's artwork add colour at their level. Then, if you like, one small surprise: a striped cushion or a single bright toy stands out all the more against a tonal room.
A room that grows with them
This is the part we love most. Because the paint is a calm, tonal backdrop rather than a theme, the room doesn't need repainting when interests change. Swap the bedding, art, lighting and accessories as your child grows, and the bones of the room still feel right from nursery to toddler to big kid.
Before you paint
Choose a durable, washable paint for the walls and a tougher finish for trims and doors, and ask your paint supplier which product suits the ceiling. Prepare surfaces properly (fill, sand and clean) so the colour sits evenly. Where possible, choose low-VOC paint, particularly for nurseries and bedrooms. And if the idea feels like a leap, begin with a reading nook or a single room before committing to more.
